The 'Not So Hidden Costs' Associated with Failing to Educate Nurses and Researchers about Health Care Economics, Financing, and Payment Policies

Nursing Economic$ Editorial Board Member Karlene Kerfoot, PhD, RN, FAAN, interviewed Peter Buerhaus, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAANP(h), for a second time. Dr. Buerhaus contributed the article, "Creating a Nursing Workforce Needed to Address the Needs of Society, Employers, and Nurses," published in the November/December 2022 issue of Nursing Economic$. This second interview focuses on the hidden costs of our failure to educate nurses in health care economics. These two articles summarize his long and distinguished career focusing on nursing and health care economics. We are grateful to Dr. Buerhaus for sharing many of his publications with Nursing Economic$, and leaving a rich legacy of significant research and publications in this area.
Program Evaluation: A Patient Transition of Care Model for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

A program evaluation was completed using the framework from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A retro spective quantitative data analysis demonstrated the transition of care program effectively met its intended objectives of reducing the Medicare readmission rate and penalty for pulmonary patients. Health care organizations should embrace this nurse-driven, interprofessional model, which is a valuable, evidence-based intervention that enhances quality, cost-effective care.

This quality improvement study introduced the practice of calculating return on investment (ROI) regarding education provided to hospital-based nurses. The nursing education team within the hospital increased their financial stewardship by using a prospective ROI to choose nursing education delivery methods.
